Featherfin Squeaker

Synodontis eupterus is widely regarded as one of the most attractive large Synodontis species, combining a handsomely marbled body pattern with an extraordinarily developed dorsal fin whose individual rays extend into long, feather-like filaments in mature specimens. Native to the Niger and Volta river systems, it inhabits large slow-moving rivers and is one of the more commonly exported African catfish.

In captivity it proves hardy and adaptable, tolerating a fairly wide range of water chemistry while preferring conditions that are soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral. It is active both day and night and more likely to be seen than many nocturnal catfish, especially in tanks with subdued lighting or abundant hiding places that give it confidence.

Adults require substantial space; a group of three in a 400 L or larger aquarium makes a spectacular display.
