Ferrarisi Badis

Badis ferrarisi was described from streams in Manipur, northeastern India, and is regarded as one of the most vividly coloured species in its genus. Displaying males exhibit intense blue-green iridescent scales contrasting with bold dark vertical bars and a suffusion of orange-red on the belly — a pattern that rivals the colourfulness of marine fish. As with all badis, colouration shifts dramatically with mood.

Husbandry requirements match those of the broader genus. The species prefers slightly cooler temperatures than many tropical community fish, reflecting its hill-stream origins. A dedicated planted tank with leaf litter, caves, and subdued lighting allows full natural behaviour. It is strictly carnivorous and in most cases will not accept dried foods.

Breeding has been documented in captivity. Males select a cave site and display vigorously to females. After spawning, the male guards the eggs with great diligence. Fry are initially tiny and require micro live foods such as Paramecium or vinegar eels before graduating to baby brine shrimp.
