Fiddler Crab Male

Male Fiddler Crabs of the genus Uca (recently partially reclassified into Minuca, Leptuca, and others) are among the most recognisable crustaceans in the world, defined by one massively enlarged claw used in visual signaling for territory and mate attraction. The smaller claw is used for feeding. Multiple species are available in the hobby, most from the Indo-Pacific or Atlantic coastal regions.

Fiddler Crabs require a paludarium or semi-terrestrial setup with a shallow brackish water zone and an accessible land area where they can burrow and feed. They are not suitable for fully aquatic freshwater tanks. In appropriate setups they are extremely active and behaviorally fascinating animals, particularly when males display to each other and to females.

Colonies of fiddler crabs, with several males and females, exhibit rich social behaviour including territorial disputes, courtship displays, and communal feeding that makes them endlessly entertaining to observe.
