Fire Tail Tetra

Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus is native to the blackwater tributaries of the upper Rio Negro and Orinoco systems in Brazil and Venezuela. The vivid scarlet pigmentation along the dorsal ridge and into the caudal fin is uniquely intense, distinguishing it at a glance from other rosy tetras. In soft, warm, tannin-rich water, this colouration reaches its full potential.

This is a mid-level schooling fish that appreciates heavily planted aquariums with gentle filtration. Groups of ten or more school tightly and display dynamic behavioural interactions that make the aquarium feel alive. It is sensitive to water quality deterioration, so consistent maintenance is essential.

Feeding is straightforward: varied micro-foods, small frozen invertebrates, and quality pellets are accepted. Supplement regularly with baby brine shrimp or daphnia to sustain the vivid red pigmentation.
