The Five Banded Barb is a handsome and modestly sized barb from the blackwater peat swamps and streams of Borneo, closely related to the more familiar Tiger Barb but significantly more peaceful in temperament. As the name suggests, five bold dark vertical bars cross the warm amber-orange body, creating a crisp, eye-catching striped pattern. The fins carry hints of orange and red, and males develop more intense body coloration than females. At 5 cm, this species is well-suited to medium-sized community aquariums without the need for very large tanks. Native to acidic blackwater environments with very soft water, low mineral content, and high tannin levels, the Five Banded Barb shows its best colors in setups that replicate these conditions: dark substrate, tannin-stained water, floating plants, and dim lighting. While more tolerant than some obligate blackwater species, it should not be kept long-term in hard or highly alkaline water. It is entirely peaceful and can be safely housed with other small, non-aggressive species including some long-finned fish, which distinguishes it clearly from the Tiger Barb. A school of six or more is recommended for optimal behavior.
