Fuelleborn's Barb

Barbus fuelleborni is native to rivers feeding into Lake Malawi and surrounding Tanzanian drainages, where it occupies a range of habitats from fast rocky rivers to slower lake tributary zones. It is a moderately large barb with a deep, laterally compressed body and silver-olive flanks. Although not as brightly coloured as some barbs, its robust schooling behaviour and adaptability make it a practical and rewarding aquarium fish.

This species thrives in the slightly harder, more alkaline conditions associated with the Rift Valley region, making it a good companion for smaller Malawi cichlids or in dedicated East African biotope setups. It tolerates a broad range of conditions, however, and can also be kept under standard tropical parameters.

Feeding is uncomplicated. Barbus fuelleborni consumes flake, pellets, vegetable matter, and frozen or live invertebrates equally well. Schools of six or more show cohesive mid-water schooling, actively exploring every corner of the aquarium.
