Furcatus Spiny Loach

Lepidocephalichthys furcatus is a relatively uncommon species native to the river systems of peninsular India. The species is distinguished by its forked caudal fin — unusual in the genus — and attractive spotted body pattern that makes it one of the more decorative Lepidocephalichthys available. It inhabits clear, sandy-bottomed streams and rivers with moderate flow.

In the aquarium, Furcatus Spiny Loach behaves similarly to other members of the genus: active, bottom-dwelling, and social. A group of five or more is recommended, with fine sandy substrate allowing natural burrowing behaviour. Moderate water flow mimicking the clear hill streams of its native range is beneficial. This species is somewhat more sensitive to water quality than the widespread L. guntea and requires consistent maintenance.

Feeding is straightforward with a varied diet of sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, and small live foods. Its distinctive tail shape and appealing spotted pattern make it a subtle conversation piece in any South Asian biotope aquarium.
