Günther's Whiptail Catfish

Sturisoma guentheri is named after Albert C. L. G. Günther, the German-British zoologist who described thousands of fish species in the 19th century. This large Colombian Sturisoma inhabits rivers of moderate flow with abundant driftwood and rocky substrate, where it spends its time grazing surfaces clean of algae and organic matter. It is one of the larger Sturisoma available to hobbyists and requires a correspondingly generous aquarium.

In the aquarium, Sturisoma guentheri is a rewarding fish for the dedicated intermediate keeper. It adapts well to captivity once established and will actively graze throughout the day and into the evening. Like other large Sturisoma, it benefits greatly from a powerhead or spray bar creating moderate flow across its grazing surfaces, replicating the oxygenated river conditions of its natural habitat.

Breeding has been achieved in captivity and follows the standard Sturisoma pattern. Males become noticeably more active and develop pronounced facial bristles prior to spawning. Egg batches are typically laid on vertical glass or smooth driftwood and hatch within 7–10 days.
