Gagata cenia is a small sisorid catfish from fast-flowing, well-oxygenated rivers draining the Himalayan foothills across Nepal, northern India, and Bangladesh. It is a rheophilic species adapted to living in high-current environments, with a dorsoventrally flattened body, powerful pectoral fins, and a specialised adhesive thoracic region that helps it maintain position against strong flow. The colouration is cryptic — mottled grey-brown over a pale base — perfectly matching the rocky river substrates it inhabits.

In the aquarium G. cenia is best suited to a dedicated hill-stream biotope with a powerhead providing strong current, smooth river stones on a sandy substrate, and excellent oxygenation. It is a gentle, non-aggressive species that feeds on biofilm, small invertebrates, and sinking foods. It should be kept in small groups as solitary specimens can be timid.

Breeding in captivity is not well-documented. The species almost certainly requires a strong current, cool water, and carefully conditioned broodstock on live foods to spawn. Its fascinating adaptations and natural biotope appeal make it a specialist's delight.
