Geay's Killifish

Laimosemion geayi is a non-annual killifish from slow-flowing forest streams and swampy areas of Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana, where it inhabits soft, slightly acidic to neutral blackwater environments. Males display a striking pattern of vivid red spots distributed across a turquoise-blue body, with similarly coloured fins that intensify during courtship. Females bear the characteristic ocellus near the caudal peduncle.

A. geayi requires soft, slightly acidic water in a 40 L species or quiet community tank. It is a good jumper and a tight-fitting lid is essential. Spawning occurs on fine-leaved plants or a yarn mop, and eggs hatch after 10–14 days in damp peat or on the mop. The species is peaceful and can be kept with other small, calm inhabitants of South American blackwater biotopes.

Laimosemion geayi is a rewarding and visually striking killifish for keepers interested in the diverse South American killifish fauna. Its vivid colouration, peaceful temperament, and interesting biogeographic origin make it an excellent addition to a South American biotope aquarium.
