Gelius Barb

Puntius gelius is one of the smaller barbs native to the Indian subcontinent, inhabiting ponds, rice paddies, ditches, and slow-moving streams from Bengal through Bangladesh. Its delicate, translucent golden body is marked with a series of faint dark blotches along the flanks, and males develop a warmer orange tint when in condition. Despite its unassuming appearance, it is a lively and sociable fish that displays best in groups of eight or more.

In the aquarium, P. gelius thrives in well-planted setups with subdued lighting and a dark substrate, which bring out its subtle golden iridescence. It is entirely peaceful and mixes well with other small, non-aggressive South Asian species such as microdevarios, small rasboras, and dwarf gouramis. Water quality should be kept clean but the species tolerates a wide range of parameters.

Breeding is straightforward: scatter-spawning over fine-leaved plants in a densely planted tank. Parents do not guard eggs and should be removed after spawning. Fry are tiny and require infusoria or commercial first foods for the first week.
