Gephyrochromis moorii

Gephyrochromis moorii is a moderately sized mbuna from Lake Malawi occupying rocky shoreline habitats. Males display blue-grey to steel-blue colouration with subtle dark barring; females are cryptically brownish. The species is not as frequently encountered in the hobby as more colourful mbuna, making it a valued find for collectors seeking less mainstream species.

Unlike many mbuna, G. moorii exhibits somewhat less extreme territorial aggression, making it a better candidate for mixed mbuna setups where overly aggressive species may not be desired. It grazes algae from rocks and requires a predominantly algae-based diet. As a maternal mouthbrooder, females hold eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. Management in harem groups with ample rockwork gives the best results. Hard, alkaline water matching Lake Malawi chemistry is essential for this species' health and longevity.
