The German Blue Ram, also known as the Butterfly Cichlid or Ram Cichlid, is one of the most beloved and widely kept dwarf cichlids in the freshwater hobby. Native to the Orinoco River basin in Colombia and Venezuela, it inhabits warm, slow-moving savanna streams with sandy substrates, sparse vegetation, and characteristically soft, acidic water. The wild habitat is seasonally flooded and often quite warm — conditions that must be replicated in captivity for the fish to truly thrive.
The colour pattern of the German Blue Ram is extraordinarily complex for such a small fish: the body is predominantly yellow on the head and anterior, transitioning to a blue-speckled silver on the flanks, with a distinctive black blotch on the side, black stripes through the eye and along the dorsal profile, and brilliant iridescent blue scales scattered across the body. The first rays of the dorsal fin are elongated and black, adding to the fish's distinctive silhouette. Males tend to be slightly larger with more pointed dorsal fins, while females develop a pink or reddish blush on the belly when in breeding condition.
In the aquarium, German Blue Rams are peaceful and engaging. They form monogamous pairs and exhibit fascinating courtship and parental behaviour, including substrate cleaning, egg guarding, and fry herding. They are best kept as pairs in community tanks with other small, peaceful fish that share their preference for soft-acid water.
