Giant Snakehead

Channa micropeltes, the Giant or Red Snakehead, is among the most commonly purchased and subsequently mismanaged snakehead species. Juveniles are genuinely stunning: a bold pattern of red-orange longitudinal stripes and black flanks makes them irresistible in the shop. However, this fish grows rapidly — reaching 50 cm within a year and eventually exceeding a metre — transforming into a plain, powerful, highly aggressive adult that consumes enormous quantities of food and produces proportionate waste.

Prospective buyers must understand the full life cycle before purchasing. An adult requires an aquarium exceeding 2000 litres with industrial filtration, will consume live fish if given the opportunity, and is subject to import restrictions or outright bans in some territories. It is one of the most frequently surrendered aquarium fish in the world due to uninformed juvenile purchases.

For those with the resources, an adult Giant Snakehead is a genuinely impressive display animal with a powerful personality. Breeding in home aquaria is very rarely documented due to size requirements.
