Gilled African Lungfish

Protopterus amphibius is found in coastal lowland rivers of Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique, inhabiting temporary pools that dry completely during the dry season. It is the smallest Protopterus species, rarely exceeding 44cm, and is distinguished by prominent external gill tufts retained throughout life. It survives drought by secreting a mucous cocoon and is capable of surviving in dried mud for extended periods. Extremely rarely available; requires specialist care identical to its larger relatives but in a somewhat smaller tank.
