The Gold Ram is a selectively bred colour variant of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi in which the yellow pigmentation naturally present in the wild-type fish has been intensified across the entire body, producing a warm, golden to deep yellow fish with reduced blue iridescence compared to the standard German Blue Ram. Many specimens retain the distinctive black eye stripe, black body spot, and some blue spangle on the dorsal and caudal fins, creating an attractive contrast with the golden base colour.
All husbandry requirements for the Gold Ram are identical to those of the German Blue Ram — warm, soft, slightly acidic water, a fine sandy substrate, and compatible peaceful tank mates. The Gold Ram is one of the more accessible colour variants and is generally considered to have similar hardiness to the wild-type fish, making it a good entry point into dwarf cichlid keeping for intermediate aquarists.
In the aquarium, Gold Rams are lively and engaging. They spend much of their time exploring the lower levels of the tank, sifting through substrate, and interacting with their environment and tank mates. Pairs form strong bonds and exhibit the characteristic monogamous parental behaviour of the species, which is fascinating to observe. Their warm golden colouration is particularly attractive in well-planted tanks with dark substrate.
