Pseudacanthicus sp. LDA031, the Gold Stripe Cactus Pleco, is an impressively armoured and visually striking loricariid from the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. Its dark grey-brown body is marked with broad longitudinal stripes of bright golden-orange running along the flanks, and its body is densely covered with the sharp odontode spines characteristic of Pseudacanthicus — making it one of the most dramatically protected fish in the aquarium hobby.

As a carnivorous Pseudacanthicus, this species demands a primarily meaty diet of prawns, mussels, mussel flesh, bloodworms, and high-protein pellets. It requires very soft, acidic blackwater conditions reflecting its Rio Negro origin (pH 5.0–6.5) and will suffer in hard or alkaline water. A large aquarium of 200 L with very powerful filtration and large cave structures is needed.

The Gold Stripe Cactus Pleco is aggressive toward other plecos, particularly other Pseudacanthicus, and should be the dominant pleco in the aquarium. It is entirely capable of inflicting injuries on tankmates that challenge it with its sharp lateral spines. It is a species for experienced keepers who can provide appropriate space, diet, and blackwater conditions.
