Golden Mylossoma

Mylossoma aureum is a laterally compressed, disc-bodied serrasalmid that forms large schools in open-water habitats across the Amazon and Orinoco drainages. Its flanks display a warm golden iridescence that becomes more pronounced in well-conditioned fish under quality lighting. It is highly active and benefits from large groups of six or more.

As an omnivore, M. aureum accepts a varied diet including plant material, insects, and small invertebrates. Despite its piranha family membership, it is entirely peaceful and makes an excellent companion for large cichlids and other robust South American fish.
