Sabanejewia aurata, the Golden Spined Loach, is a small, elegantly patterned loach native to rivers draining into the Black and Caspian Seas, including the Danube, Dnieper, and Don basins. It is distinguished from Cobitis by a series of golden-yellow spots along the lateral band and a different suborbital spine structure. At around 10 cm it is a compact species that inhabits sandy, well-oxygenated river stretches.

In the aquarium, Sabanejewia aurata requires cool, clean, well-oxygenated water with fine sandy substrate. It is a dedicated burrower that spends much of the day concealed beneath the sand. A long-format aquarium with gentle to moderate flow mimics its natural riverine habitat well. The species is peaceful and groups of three to five show the most natural behaviour.

Feeding focuses on small meaty foods: micro pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworm are all accepted. The Sabanejewia loach is a specialist choice for the European freshwater biotope aquarist and offers something genuinely different from the more common Cobitis taenia. Its golden colouration is striking and quite unlike most other European loaches.
