Goldeye

Hiodon alosoides is distributed across the interior river systems of Canada and the northern United States, favouring large, turbid, fast-flowing rivers. Its golden iris is the key identification feature distinguishing it from the similar Mooneye. Like its relative it belongs to the ancient osteoglossomorph lineage and requires cool, highly oxygenated water. It is a schooling open-water predator that hunts insects and small fish near the surface. Rarely offered in the hobby; a genuinely unusual coldwater specimen.
