Graceful Twig Catfish

Farlowella gracilis lives up to its name as one of the most slender members of the genus, found in soft, acidic blackwater rivers of the Peruvian Amazon. Like all Farlowella species, it clings to driftwood and plant stems with its specialised sucker mouth, grazing fine algae and biofilm rather than consuming plant tissue. Its pale brown colouration with a thin dark lateral stripe makes it extraordinarily difficult to spot among submerged wood.

This species requires soft, slightly acidic water and is not suited to hard, alkaline tap water without treatment. A mature, heavily planted aquarium with plenty of driftwood provides the ideal environment. It is particularly sensitive to dissolved waste and will decline rapidly if nitrates rise above 20 ppm.

Farlowella gracilis is best kept singly or in pairs and should be housed with similarly calm, small-bodied companions. Its slender body makes it vulnerable to even mild aggression from larger fish. Feeding must include regular offerings of algae wafers and fresh vegetable matter, as it will not thrive on standard community fish food alone.
