Grammepareius Eartheater (Apure)

Geophagus grammepareius is a handsome, mid-sized eartheater from the Apure and Caroní river systems of Venezuela. It is easily recognised by a bold dark lateral stripe running from snout to caudal base and contrasting red-orange dorsal fin tips in dominant males. A sand sifter and delayed mouthbrooder, it forms loose social groups and pairs for breeding. Males become more intensely coloured during spawning preparation. The species inhabits moderately warm, soft to slightly acidic water, often over sandy substrates in river margins and slow-flowing channels. In captivity it is moderately hardy, adapting to a range of soft-water parameters. Deep fine sand, open areas, and a group of five or more individuals bring out the best behaviour. Compatible with large, peaceful tetras, other eartheaters, and calm catfish.
