The Green Discus is a captive-bred variety that captures the natural, earthy beauty of wild discus coloration while presenting a distinct aesthetic character. The base body is typically olive green to brownish-green, richly overlaid with turquoise horizontal striping, reddish-brown reticulations, and in finer specimens, a metallic green sheen that shimmers under aquarium lighting. Unlike the bold, saturated varieties produced by modern selective breeding, the Green Discus appeals to aquarists who prefer a more naturalistic look.
Drawing on the same wild South American heritage as all captive-bred discus, the Green Discus thrives in conditions that mimic the tannin-stained, ultra-soft, warm blackwater rivers of the Amazon basin. Wild discus populations from which captive varieties descend historically inhabited river margins and flooded forest zones, feeding on invertebrates and organic detritus.
In the aquarium, Green Discus are peaceful, relatively slow-moving fish that benefit from being kept in groups. Their unique, natural-toned coloration deepens and becomes more vibrant in well-maintained, acidic, soft water — the same conditions that promote health and longevity. As with all discus, pristine water quality, a varied diet, and a stress-free environment are the keys to enjoying these remarkable cichlids at their best.
