Guianacara owroewefi (Blue Form)

Guianacara owroewefi is a medium-sized cichlid endemic to the Suriname and Maroni river systems of the Guiana Shield. The blue form from Surinamese interior rivers is particularly prized for its vivid blue-green iridescence that suffuses the body, contrasting dramatically with the large dark blotch on the mid-flank and the dark vertical bar through the eye.

Guianacara species belong to the geophagine tribe and share some behavioural traits with eartheaters, occasionally sifting substrate. However, they are more territorial than most eartheaters during the spawning season and will defend a cave or crevice site aggressively. Outside of spawning, they are relatively peaceful mid-sized cichlids.

This species is uncommonly available and is valued by Guiana Shield cichlid enthusiasts. It pairs well with other Guiana Shield species such as Crenicichla and smaller geophagines in a biotope-themed aquarium.
