Lepidocephalichthys guntea is one of the most widely distributed loaches in South and Southeast Asia, found from Pakistan east to Vietnam in a variety of riverine and lentic habitats. It is a small, mottled-brown spiny loach reaching around 9 cm, with a characteristic bifid rostral lobe and erectile suborbital spine that distinguish it as a member of Lepidocephalichthys.

In the aquarium, the Guntea Loach is an active, inquisitive fish that spends its time investigating the substrate, digging, and emerging to feed. It is tolerant of a range of water conditions and is among the easier specialist loaches to maintain. It is best kept in groups of five or more with other peaceful, small to medium fish. The substrate should be fine-grained to allow burrowing without injury.

Diet is varied — sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and small live invertebrates are all relished. The Guntea Loach is an excellent snail controller and will pick off small pest snails from the substrate. Its hardiness and widespread origin make it a robust and forgiving choice for the aspiring loach keeper.
