Gymnogenys Eartheater

Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys is a medium-sized temperate eartheater from southern Brazil and Uruguay, found in the Jacuí, Pelotas, and coastal drainage systems. It has a softer, more understated colouration than many cichlids — warm browns and greens with iridescent highlights — that makes it particularly appealing in a naturalistic South American setup.

This species is among the most adaptable eartheaters, thriving in unheated aquaria in temperate climates and tolerating a broad range of water chemistry. It is peaceful enough for community aquaria with robust companions and does not demand the precise water conditions required by tropical blackwater eartheaters. Fine sand is still necessary for substrate sifting.

Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys pairs readily and both parents share brood care in typical open-spawning cichlid fashion. It is a rewarding beginner cichlid that introduces hobbyists to eartheater behaviour in a forgiving package.
