Half-banded Spiny Eel

Macrognathus circumcinctus is one of the most elegantly patterned of the smaller spiny eels, displaying alternating dark and pale half-band markings along its flanks that give it a clean and attractive appearance. Found in slow-moving rivers, swamps, and flooded rice paddies across Thailand, Malaysia, and Sumatra, it is well adapted to warm, slightly soft water.

Its modest maximum size of around 20 cm makes it suitable for aquariums that would be too small for its larger relatives. It is genuinely beginner-friendly, adapting to a range of water conditions and accepting most meaty foods without difficulty. A soft sandy substrate and ample hiding spots among plants or rocks will encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress.

This species is thoroughly peaceful with fish too large to swallow and can be kept with most standard community species of appropriate size. Multiple individuals can be kept together successfully in larger tanks, though they are not truly social and do not require companions.
