Half-spotted Leporinus

Leporinus maculatus, the Half-spotted or Spotted Leporinus, is distinguished by a unique pattern in which dark spots are concentrated along the lower half of the body, leaving the dorsal area relatively plain and pale. This unusual spotting arrangement sets it apart visually from the banded or striped relatives and makes it a conversation piece in any large South American display.

Care requirements follow standard large Leporinus practice: large tank, strong flow, secure lid, robust or artificial planting, and a plant-heavy diet. This species is generally considered slightly less aggressive than some of its larger banded relatives, though intraspecific squabbling is still possible in insufficient space.

For the collector and large-tank enthusiast, L. maculatus represents an excellent opportunity to display a lesser-known Leporinus species. Regular water changes, stable conditions, and a varied herbivorous diet keep it in excellent health and full colour.
