Haplochromis latifasciatus

Haplochromis latifasciatus is a medium-sized Victorian haplochromine characterised by a prominent broad lateral stripe running from snout to caudal peduncle, visible in both sexes but especially bold in females and juveniles. Males in breeding dress develop vivid orange-red and blue colouration overlaying the stripe pattern, creating a striking fish in full colour. The species is sometimes confused with H. obliquidens due to superficial similarity, but is distinguishable by body proportions and stripe characteristics.

This species is one of the more accessible Victorian haplochromines for aquarists transitioning from Malawian cichlids. It tolerates a somewhat wider range of water parameters than more specialised Victorian species and breeds readily in a standard cichlid harem setup. It is also less aggressive than many Victorian predatory species, making it suitable for mixed Victorian community tanks.

Regular maintenance of water quality, a varied diet, and adequate territory structure are the cornerstones of successful latifasciatus keeping.
