Haplochromis sp. 'Dayglow'

Haplochromis sp. 'Dayglow' is an undescribed Victorian haplochromine that owes its trade name to the near-fluorescent orange-yellow nuptial colouration of dominant males. Under full-spectrum aquarium lighting, the colouration appears to glow, giving the fish an almost artificial luminosity that has made it one of the most eye-catching undescribed species available to Victorian cichlid enthusiasts.

The species is presumed to originate from rocky shoreline habitats around Lake Victoria, exhibiting the typical vertical niche partitioning and territorial behaviour of Victorian haplochromines. Males are aggressive toward rivals of the same or similar colour, and the harem keeping arrangement is strongly recommended. Females are inconspicuous by comparison, with standard silver-grey colouration.

Dayglow haplochromines are intermediate-level fish requiring consistent water quality, a varied diet incorporating plant-based foods to prevent bloat, and sufficient territory structure to manage male aggression.
