Haplochromis sp. 'Flameback'

Haplochromis sp. 'Flameback' is one of the most commercially successful undescribed Victorian haplochromines in the hobby. The common name derives from the vivid flame-orange colouration along the dorsal surface and nape of dominant males, which contrasts dramatically with the steel-blue colouration of the flanks and head. This combination creates a striking two-tone effect that has made the Flameback one of the most requested Victorian cichlids.

Its origin is associated with Tanzanian and Kenyan rocky shorelines, though the precise collection locality varies between suppliers. The species exhibits typical Victorian haplochromine behaviour — highly territorial males, maternal mouthbrooding females, and strong site fidelity once territories are established.

The Flameback is best kept in a species or Victorian community tank with careful species selection. Males will aggressively drive out rival males but are generally manageable with adequate rockwork providing multiple non-overlapping territories.
