Haplochromis sp. 'Torpedo' (Lake Albert)

Haplochromis sp. 'Torpedo' is an undescribed haplochromine cichlid from Lake Albert, the rift lake on the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is connected to the Lake Victoria basin via the White Nile. Its streamlined, torpedo-shaped body is an adaptation for swift open-water movement in pursuit of prey, and adult males develop vivid nuptial colouration of blues and yellows that distinguishes them clearly from females.

Lake Albert haplochromines are underrepresented in the hobby compared to Lake Victoria endemics, making sp. 'Torpedo' an interesting collection point species for aquarists wishing to build a broader Victorian-region cichlid display. Care requirements are broadly similar to Lake Victoria species: alkaline hard water, space for territorial behaviour, and a varied diet.

This species is best kept by aquarists with prior Victorian haplochromine experience given its predatory tendencies and size.
