Haplotaxodon microlepis

Haplotaxodon microlepis occupies a unique ecological niche as a genuine open-water pelagic predator. Its large eyes, silvery-blue body, and streamlined build reflect adaptations for hunting in the lake's extensive open-water column. It is rarely encountered in the hobby due to the challenges of deep-water collection and transport.

In the aquarium, H. microlepis requires a very large, elongated tank with substantial open swimming volume. It is not suited to small or heavily decorated aquariums and should not be kept with fish small enough to be eaten.

H. microlepis is a fish for the most dedicated and experienced Tanganyika specialists. Its silver-blue iridescence and flowing open-water movement create a genuinely dramatic display in a purpose-built large aquarium.
