Harlequin Crayfish Juvenile

Juvenile Cherax pulcher Harlequin Crayfish offered at 3–5 cm already show the beginnings of the extraordinary iridescent multicolour patterning the species is famous for, with early blue, orange, and red highlights visible on the carapace and chelae. Raising C. pulcher from juvenile stock is a rewarding experience, as the pattern develops and intensifies over many months through successive molts.

At juvenile size, C. pulcher requires the same water quality standards as adults — clean, moderately hard water in the 22–28°C range — but can be kept in a smaller setup initially. As the crayfish approaches adult size, it will need to be upgraded to a tank of at least 120 L with structured rockwork, caves, and excellent filtration.

Juvenile Harlequin Crayfish are less aggressive than adults and can sometimes be maintained briefly in community setups with robust, similarly-sized fish, but should be given their own species tank as they mature. Good nutrition with varied, calcium-rich food during the juvenile growth phase significantly enhances adult colour expression.
