Harpagochromis guiarti

Harpagochromis guiarti is one of the larger and more formidable predatory Victorian haplochromines, reaching up to 22 centimetres and equipped with a large oblique mouth capable of engulfing surprisingly large prey. In the wild it is an ambush predator of the open rocky and sandy zones of Lake Victoria, relying on speed and camouflage to approach prey undetected. Males develop attractive breeding colouration at maturity, though the fish is primarily kept for its ecological and behavioural interest rather than colour alone.

This species demands a very large aquarium — 400 litres is a practical minimum — and must be housed only with fish that cannot be consumed. It is not a community fish in any conventional sense and should be considered a centrepiece species in a large piscivore display. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder.
