Harpagochromis sp. 'Golden Duck'

Harpagochromis sp. 'Golden Duck' is an undescribed Victorian haplochromine named for its distinctive golden-yellow nuptial colouration and the projecting snout characteristic of the genus. Harpagochromis are visual predators that ambush prey fish with explosive speed, using an oblique mouth strike. The Golden Duck form is among the most colourful members of this predatory genus and commands significant attention from advanced Victorian cichlid hobbyists.

Given its predatory nature and moderate size of up to 18 centimetres, this species should be housed only with fish too large to be eaten. A spacious aquarium of at least 300 litres is recommended to accommodate its territorial behaviour and provide adequate swimming room. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder.

Feeding in captivity is straightforward — high-protein carnivore pellets, frozen krill, mysis, and silversides are all accepted. Live feeders are unnecessary and should be avoided to prevent disease introduction.
