Harreri Eartheater

Geophagus harreri is a seldom-exported eartheater from the coastal rivers of Suriname and French Guiana. It is immediately distinguished from related species by its notably high-backed body profile and a spangling of small iridescent spots across the flanks. Males in peak condition display a warm golden flush that enhances the overall patterning.

Its rarity in the trade makes it a sought-after species among eartheater enthusiasts. Care requirements follow the standard Geophagus formula: spacious tank, deep fine sand, clean slightly acidic water, and a varied sinking-food diet. It performs best in groups where natural social hierarchies can form.

Breeding follows the typical biparental mouthbrooding pattern of the genus. Conditioning on quality live and frozen foods encourages spawning. Due to its limited availability, captive-bred specimens are especially valued in the hobby.
