Harreri Eartheater (Rio Maroni)

Geophagus harreri comes from the Marowijne (Maroni) and Suriname river drainages of Suriname and French Guiana. It is one of several Geophagus species endemic to the Guiana shield river systems, an area of high cichlid biodiversity. The species displays a bold, dark mid-body blotch, faint iridescent scaling, and orange-margined unpaired fins. A delayed mouthbrooder, it forms loose groups and accepts a variety of water parameters within the soft-water range. It is moderately hardy relative to many eartheaters, adapting well to captivity when provided with clean, warm water, fine sand, and open areas. An attractive and practical choice for Guiana-shield biotope displays alongside other species from Suriname and French Guiana. Compatible with large tetras and peaceful bottom-dwellers.
