Hasselt's Loach

Lepidocephalichthys hasseltii is a medium-sized spiny loach from Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, where it inhabits large rivers, lowland streams, and flooded fields with soft substrates. At up to 10 cm it is one of the larger Lepidocephalichthys species, and its reticulate, net-like body patterning makes it one of the most attractive members of the genus.

In the aquarium this species is hardy and adaptable, tolerating moderate water hardness better than many Southeast Asian loaches. It is best kept in a group of at least five with fine substrate — essential for burrowing — and a mix of open areas and cave hides. It is diurnal and one of the more consistently visible spiny loaches in captivity.

Feeding is easy: high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, and small live foods are all accepted. Hasselt's Loach will also pick off small snails from the substrate. A well-maintained tank with regular water changes and stable parameters ensures long-term health and full expression of the species' attractive patterning.
