Head-and-tail Light Tetra

Hemigrammus ocellifer is one of the oldest and most enduring aquarium tetras, first imported to Europe in the early 20th century. It is found across a broad range of the Amazon basin and Guiana Shield. The golden spot above the eye and the second golden-orange spot at the base of the caudal fin give the appearance of a tiny car with both headlights and taillights illuminated, hence the memorable common name.

This is an extremely hardy and adaptable species suitable for almost any freshwater community aquarium. It tolerates a wide range of water parameters, is peaceful toward all tank mates, and is an active, attractive schooling fish. Its durability and low demands make it an outstanding beginner species.

Any quality aquarium food is accepted. Regular feeding and consistent water changes are all this species needs to remain healthy and colourful for its full 3–5 year lifespan.
