Heckel Red Head Eartheater

Geophagus sp. 'Heckel Red Head' is among the most visually spectacular undescribed eartheaters in the hobby. Collected from clear-to-blackwater tributaries of the upper Rio Negro in Amazonas state, Brazil, it features a deep orange-red wash across the entire head and operculum that contrasts dramatically with turquoise iridescent flank scaling. The species appears closely related to the altifrons/dicrozoster group but differs in this distinctive head colouration. It is highly sensitive to water quality, requiring very soft, warm, and acidic conditions typical of the Rio Negro. Fine-sand substrate at least 6 cm deep is essential. Best maintained in a dedicated species group or with other peaceful soft-water cichlids. A delayed mouthbrooder; spawning groups benefit from stable conditions and excellent nutrition.
