Helanthium bolivianum

Helanthium bolivianum (formerly classified as Echinodorus bolivianus) is a compact South American species native to Bolivia and surrounding countries, inhabiting the sandy and muddy margins of slow rivers and seasonal pools. In the aquarium it stays very compact at 5–15 cm and spreads freely via horizontal runners, producing a dense, low-growing foreground carpet of narrow, upright, bright-green leaves. It is one of the most commonly used foreground plants in planted aquariums worldwide.

The plant is exceptionally adaptable, tolerating a broad range of water parameters from soft and acidic to moderately hard and neutral. It requires no CO2 injection and adapts to low and medium lighting, though stronger light promotes denser, shorter growth. Regular root feeding helps it establish quickly in new setups and sustain vigorous runner production.

Helanthium bolivianum is especially popular in South American biotope aquariums where it complements small tetras, dwarf cichlids, and corydoras. Its rapid runner spread and easy culture make it a reliable choice for aquarists at all experience levels who want an effective, natural-looking foreground plant.
