Helanthium latifolium

Helanthium latifolium is a South American species closely related to H. bolivianum but distinguished by its wider, more paddle-shaped leaves that create a slightly fuller, more textured foreground than the narrow-leaved chain swords. In the aquarium it typically stays under 20 cm, spreading via runners to form a lush, structured colony that suits both foreground and low-midground positions. The leaves are a healthy, bright-to-mid green with clear venation.

Like other Helanthium species, H. latifolium is highly adaptable to a wide range of tropical water parameters and does not require CO2 injection. It responds well to root feeding and benefits from regular nutrient supplementation to sustain active runner production. Under higher light it stays more compact; in lower light it stretches slightly.

H. latifolium fills a useful niche as a foreground plant with more visual mass than the very narrow-leaved chain swords, providing a denser, more substantial low-level texture that complements both natural aquascapes and structured planted layouts.
