Hemera Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla hemera is a visually outstanding and scientifically fascinating pike cichlid from the Rio Teles Pires in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Described in 2014, it is part of a radiation of colourful, medium-sized Crenicichla unique to this river system. Dominant males develop a series of bright lateral ocelli and remarkable red-orange pigmentation across the lower flanks and unpaired fins — rivalling the visual impact of much-sought tropical reef species.

The Rio Teles Pires is a clear-to-lightly-stained river with a rocky substrate in many reaches, and C. hemera is adapted to well-oxygenated, low-hardness water. In the aquarium, RO or soft tap water buffered to pH 5.5–6.8 is ideal. The species is an active fish that appreciates swimming space but also requires well-defined cave structures and visual barriers to manage aggression.

C. hemera is seldom exported due to the remoteness of its range and Brazilian export restrictions, making it a true collector's species. Aquarists who obtain specimens are strongly encouraged to breed them given their scientific and aesthetic significance.
