Henlei Stingray

Potamotrygon henlei is endemic to the Tocantins River drainage in central Brazil, sharing its range with the famous P. leopoldi but distinguished by numerous smaller, more densely packed white to pale yellow spots on a dark brown to black disc. In the trade it is sometimes confused with P. leopoldi, from which it differs by the greater number of smaller spots and the slightly cooler, less extreme water parameters of its native habitat. It is a large and impressive ray in maturity, reaching 50cm disc width. Water quality requirements are stringent, as with all potamotrygonids. It has been successfully bred in captivity and produces moderately sized litters. Its spectacular appearance ensures it remains in constant demand among serious ray keepers.
