Herichthys minckleyi is endemic to the Cuatro Cienegas basin in Coahuila, Mexico — a unique oasis of springs and pools isolated in the Chihuahuan Desert. This extraordinary system hosts numerous endemic species, and H. minckleyi is its flagship. The species is critically endangered due to habitat degradation, water extraction, and introduced species, making its maintenance in captivity a genuine conservation contribution.

What makes this species scientifically famous is its pharyngeal jaw polymorphism: within a single population, individuals develop either molariform (broad, crushing) or papilliform (smaller, pointed) pharyngeal teeth, allowing exploitation of different food resources. This within-species ecological divergence is a celebrated model system in evolutionary biology.

In the aquarium, H. minckleyi requires cool, hard, alkaline water that replicates the spring-fed pools of Cuatro Cienegas. It is moderately aggressive and should be maintained by dedicated hobbyists with an interest in conservation.
