Honey Gourami Wild

Trichogaster chuna in its wild form is a slender, modest-looking fish compared to the bright orange and red strains selectively bred for the hobby. Wild specimens have a yellowish-tan body with a faint lateral stripe in females and a deeper orange-gold flush developing in males at maturity. They are found in densely vegetated slow-moving waters of India and Bangladesh.

Wild honey gouramis are extremely peaceful and somewhat shy, making them ideal for planted nano aquariums with calm, non-competitive tank mates. They prefer soft, slightly acidic water but are notably adaptable. Males develop a distinctive dark throat patch during breeding season, which intensifies as they court females.

Breeding is straightforward: the male builds a bubble nest and guards the clutch for 24–36 hours. This species pairs well with small rasboras, nano tetras, and dwarf corydoras in a planted biotope. It remains one of the best choices for aquarists wanting a labyrinth fish for a peaceful nano community.
