Humeralis Piranha

Serrasalmus humeralis is distributed across the central Amazon and Orinoco drainages and is distinguished by a clear, rounded dark spot just behind the gill cover on the humeral region. This feature, combined with a bright red iris and scattered silver iridescence, gives it a classically attractive piranha appearance.

As a solitary predator it must be housed alone. Its moderate maximum size of around 28 cm makes it marginally more practical for advanced home aquarists than the largest Serrasalmus species. It requires soft, slightly acidic water and a varied carnivorous diet. Importation is sporadic.
