Hummelincki Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla hummelincki is a moderately sized pike cichlid from the Lake Maracaibo basin and Orinoco tributaries of Venezuela, described by Hoedeman in 1945. It is a handsome species with a series of discrete dark lateral spots arranged in a longitudinal row against a pale silver body — the lower flanks displaying metallic blue-green iridescent scaling in well-maintained adults.

The species inhabits a range of river types in Venezuela, from clear mountain-fed streams to turbid lowland rivers, giving it useful adaptability to aquarium conditions. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water is ideal. A 200 L tank is the minimum for a pair, decorated with sand, driftwood, and rock caves providing clear territorial boundaries.

C. hummelincki is a reliable feeder that accepts frozen carnivore foods and quality pellets without difficulty. Breeding has been documented in captivity, making it a worthwhile project for aquarists with interest in Venezuelan Crenicichla. The species is occasionally available through specialist importers.
