Hump-head Apistogramma

Apistogramma gibbiceps is one of the largest members of the genus and is immediately recognizable by the significant nuchal hump that develops on dominant males — a trait so unusual within Apistogramma that it initially caused taxonomic confusion. This species is native to the acidic blackwater rivers of the Brazilian Amazon and is a true showpiece for advanced hobbyists.

Males can reach 9 cm and display deep body profiles with brilliant blue and orange coloration, especially striking during breeding season. The species requires a larger tank than most apistos to accommodate its size and territorial needs.

Despite its demanding nature, A. gibbiceps is a rewarding species that becomes surprisingly tame over time and will eagerly accept food from its keeper's hand. Patience with water chemistry is well rewarded.
